Repair service

Gap filling and board repairs.

Resin-and-dust slurry for narrow gaps, slivered pine for wider ones, board swaps for water damage. We finish so the repair is invisible once the floor is sealed.

Hands-on board repair and gap filling on a reclaimed oak floor
About this service

What we do, in detail.

Most older floors have moved. Boards shrink in winter, lift around radiators, split where nails have rusted out. Sanding alone won't fix any of it, the gaps just look cleaner. We treat repair as a step of its own, before the floor is finished, so the finished surface reads as one piece.

Our approach depends on the size of the gap. Narrow gaps we fill with a slurry of sanding dust from your floor and a tinted resin, so it takes stain and lacquer the same way the surrounding wood does. Anything wider gets a sliver of seasoned pine, glued and trimmed flush. Boards beyond saving we lift and replace with stock matched to your timber.

What's included

Every job covers

  • Resin and sawdust gap fill

Tinted to your floor and finished alongside it. Best for hairline to ~3 mm gaps.

  • Slivered pine for wider gaps

Seasoned pine wedges glued in and trimmed flush before sanding. Holds where slurry would crack out.

  • Board swaps and patches

Water-damaged, rotted or split boards lifted and replaced with matched stock. Colour-matched at finishing stage.

  • Squeak fixes

Loose boards re-screwed into joists from above and plug-filled, or from below where access allows.

How it works

The process, step by step.

  1. 1

    Inspect before sanding

We mark up gaps, splits and damaged boards on the survey and quote them in. No surprises mid-job.

  2. 2

    Repair, then sand

Repairs go in before the final sand so the patches and slurry come back through level with the rest of the floor.

  3. 3

    Finish over the top

Stain (if any) and Bona finish go on as one continuous coat, so repairs disappear into the floor.

FAQ

Common questions.

Will the fill match the floor?

Slurry takes stain because it's made from your own sanding dust. Pine slivers are sanded back with the boards and finish to the same tone. From standing height, repairs read as the floor itself.

What's the widest gap you can fill?

Slurry tops out around 3 mm. Anything wider we'll use pine slivers or swap the board. We talk you through the options on the survey.

Will the fill crack out again?

Slurry can over very wide gaps, which is why we won't use it on them. Pine slivers and full board swaps hold permanently.

Can you fix water damage?

Usually yes. We lift affected boards, dry and treat the subfloor if needed, and replace with matched stock. The patch is colour-matched at finishing stage.
